(bells ringing) church bells rang 26 times for the 20 first graders and six adults killed at sandy hook elementary school. the gunman's mother was also killed. the scene was repeated all across the country-- including at the white house. the national rifle association broke its silence today following the newtown tragedy. the executive vice president of the n.r.a., wayne laperriere, said that schools would be safer if they were protected with guns. here's chip reid. >> reporter: wayne laperriere gave no ground to gun control advocates who want to ban assault weapons and magazines that hold more than ten rounds. instead, he shifted the focus to the n.r.a.'s plan for securing the nation's schools. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. what if when adam lanza started shooting his way into sandy hook elementary school last friday he'd been confronted by qualified armed security? i call on congress today to act immediate

was a bush master assault rifle. that sounds familiar, it is the same weapon used in the 14509ings newtown connecticut. neither obtained their guns illeg illegally. we're trying to figure out how to stop these massacres, one is far too many, and they seem to be a terrifyingly regular occurrence in our country. still, these horrific events shock us so deeply because they remain rare. and because the circumstances are each so specific, it is very difficult to government policy to prevent them. most of the policies we think about wouldn't have worked. the federal private sales loophole often called the gun show loophole should be closed. but there is no evidence the killers bought their guns at gun shows or through the loophole. background checks should be stricter, the guns used in western new york and connecticut were not registered in the names of the shooters. waiting periods make sense for gun buyers and particularly to prevent suicide. they would have had little effect on killers who did not purchase their guns through legitimate channels. the assault weapons rifle ban should never have

think it's been a travesty in the wake of newtown, and yes, we should have a conversation about gun control and there should be parody with taking care of the mental health of americans. that discussion has been drowned out or lost or lost or never, ever happened. mr. lanza was obviously a very sick individual and needed help. i'm not sure the mental health discussion has gotten enough attention. what do you think? >> no, it hasn't. in fact, what's been happening is, of course, there's been more stereo typing stereotyping ever people with mental illness calling these people crazy. yes, he probably did have autism and/or asperger's, but people with those disorders don't generally become violent and what's interesting is that on some of the stories on the internet there are people who have made -- posted comments blaming what he did because there have been some unconfirmed reports that maybe he was take something medication. people have made comments blaming the shooting rampage on the medication. this isn't true. the problem is that people -- anybody who needs medication needs to be
